Every message is scored as you send it, so you see whether it worked without waiting for the end. A good read and the score goes up. A lazy line and the score goes down while you are still typing the next one.
Referencing something they told you days ago is one of the largest single moves on it. Let it fall far enough and the character leaves you on read, then rejects you outright. They can turn you down early too, before you have built anything, because a character who gets bored is not obliged to keep answering.
Generic compliments pull the meter down further the higher the level you are on.
Photo unlocks and level progression are both decided by where the number sits.

The meter is per match. Levels are the layer above it, and you climb those with XP earned through gameplay and milestones.
So one good conversation does not carry you, and one bad one does not sink you. Each level also has a Level Card with the strategies that work at that difficulty.
Difficulty is not cosmetic. Higher levels bring AI characters who are harder to impress, and lines that worked at Level 1 stop working by Level 7.

The best part is not the number. It is the moment a character who was giving you nothing suddenly writes back like she means it. Early on you get one-line replies and the sense that you are being humoured. Keep reading her right and the messages get longer, the jokes land, and she starts asking about you.
That turn is the thing people play for. It is a slow burn, so it takes real conversations to get there, and it is different with everyone. Some of them soften early and stay warm. Some make you work for weeks and then never let it go.

It is built that way. The ceiling on how far a character will go rises with your level, so there is no route straight to the top, and the easy points dry up as trust climbs. Past each threshold the way they write to you changes, which is the part you are actually playing for.
